completely frozen resulting in the wildfowl having no refuge when
the first Ski-boat came on the lake at 11:20. Most of the 97
Cormorants departed to the north-east but most of the 39 Goosanders

along with a record 76 Great Crested Grebes. 4 Shovelers, 3 Gadwall,
3 Ruddy Ducks, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Sparrowhawk were
also seen (GE). The gull roost was impressive with probably more
Herring Gulls and certainly more Lesser Black-backs than last night.

Shoals of small Perch and Roach were in the outlet pool
at the very end of the canal and as can be seen from the photos (© N
Stych) they were clearly gasping for air, implying that their huge
numbers had depleted the oxygen in the water. It seems likely that
they had found their way down the sluice from the lake, perhaps having
taken refuge from the large numbers of Cormorants, Goosanders and
Great Crested Grebes that have been very actively feeding just off the
dam for the past few days.
