Sun 1st 2 Stonechats were present and one or two Common Darters were still on the wing (PW) and 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls were in the roost.
On No Man's Bank there was a Barn Owl hunting and Tawny Owl calling (JHu, PW, NS).
Mon 2nd No records in the fog.
Tues 3rd On No Man's Bank there were 2 Stonechats and a pair of Ravens (PW).
Wed 4th There were 205 Tufted Ducks, 7 Goldeneye, 79 Wigeon, 3 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 13 Little Grebes, 90 Lapwings, a Raven, a Buzzard, a Peregrine, a Kestrel and a Willow Tit. A Migrant Hawker was in flight along the railway near the Lakeside platform (GE). During the late afternoon both a Short-eared Owl and Barn Owl were hunting over the North Heath and the Norton Bog Starling roost numbered around 1000 birds (GR). The large gull roost held at least one adult Yellow-legged Gull (GE).
A Crossbill flew north over No Man's Bank during the morning (PW).

Fri 6th A male Red-crested Pochard was with the Coot at the north end of the dam (GR).

Tues 10th The male Red-crested Pochard was on Norton Bog Lagoon (Slurry Pool). 6 Goldeneye, 54 Wigeon, 16 Teal, 131 Lapwings and good numbers of snipe were also present (ICW).
Wed 11th The Red-crested Pochard was still present along with 21 Wigeon, 13 Teal, 10 Goldeneye, 2 Pochard, a drake Gadwall, 3 Cormorants, a Kingfisher and a Chiffchaff (CM).
Chasewater Work-party 10am - 1pm. Meet at Innovation Centre. All welcome.
Thurs 12th The Red-crested Pochard was still on Norton Bog Lagoon. A Raven mobbed a Short-eared Owl and a Stonechat was on the north shore heath (PW).
Fri 13th
The Red-crested Pochard was still present (photos PW) along with 8 Goosanders, 14 redpolls and a Chiffchaff (ICW). The gull roost held 3 (2 adult, 2cy) Caspian Gulls, 2 Yellow-legged Gulls and a Lesser Black-backed x Herring Gull hybrid.
Sat 14th The Red-crested Pochard flew from Norton Bog to the Swag during the day. The gull roost held 3 (2 adult, 2cy) Caspian Gulls, 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls and an adult Mediterranean Gull.
Sun 15th Friends of Norton Bog work-party 10am - 1pm. All welcome.
The Red-crested Pochard was back on Norton Bog Lagoon (Slurry Pool for those of us not old enough to remember Norton Bog or don't acknowledge the efforts of Staffs CC and the Friends of Norton Bog). Also noted were 34 Canada Geese, 2 Teal, 32 Wigeon, 4 Pochard, 8 Goosanders, 3 Cormorants, 18 Snipe, a Common Gull and a Willow Tit (CM). Nothing of note was seen in the gull roost which held reduced numbers of large gulls.
Mon 16th The Red-crested Pochard was still present and the gull roost held an adult Yellow-legged Gull , a 2cy Caspian Gull and an adult Caspian Gull which flew west at 15:45.

Mediterranean Gull PNU5(GE)

A Shag was a Storm Barney driven addition to the monthly WeBS count which included the following totals: 80 Mute Swans, 28 Canada Geese, 58 Wigeon, 6 Gadwall, 16 Teal, 124 Mallard, 1 Red-crested Pochard, 225 Tufted Ducks, 7 Pochard, 12 Goldeneye, 4 Cormorants, 3 Grey Herons, 13 Little Grebes, 17 Great Crested Grebes, 10 Moorhens, 851 Coot and 119 Lapwings. An adult Mediterranean Gull with ring PNU5 was present during the morning. This bird was ringed on 18th May 2013 at Jezioro Rynskie, a lake near Wejdyki, Ryn in north-eastern Poland. It was then seen at Oulton Mere, Solihull on 1st August 2014 (ARD), then at La Neuville, northern France on 7th March 2015 and back to Oulton Mere on 20th July 2015 (ARD) before arriving at Chasewater where it almost certainly also spent much of last winter as shown by the image of a ringed Mediterranean Gull standing on the same spot on February 15th.
The large but wind-blown and difficult to view roost held an adult Yellow-legged Gull and a 3cy Caspian Gull, probably the same as the bird at Belvide yesterday. Also present were 2 Ravens, 40 Fieldfares, a Grey Wagtail and a Willow Tit (GE).
Wed 18th The Shag was still present off the dam during the morning and a Woodcock was feeding below the dam.
Thurs 19th The Shag was still present but could be elusive and the adult Mediterranean Gull was again on its favourite perch near the pier and 11 Cormorants were present (GE). The Red-crested Pochard was reported from Norton Bog Lagoon and there was a very interesting claim of 2 Marsh Tits as well as a Willow Tit - more information would be greatly appreciated. An adult Yellow-legged Gull roosted along with a good candidate for a Baltic Gull, perhaps the recently claimed Worcestershire bird. Jet black mantle, long stretched wings etc were noted and photos taken (RH).
Fri 20th The Shag was present throughout the day and 6 Goosanders were around the Island. A Ring-necked Parakeet was being mobbed by gulls around the West Shore at dusk and the gull roost held the adult Mediterranean Gull, 3 (2 adult, 1cy) Caspian Gulls and the Lesser Black-backed x Herring Gull hybrid.

Sat 21st The Shag was present but there was no sign of the Red-crested Pochard (PW). 2 (adult, 3cy) Caspian Gulls and 3 adult Yellow-legged Gulls were in the roost.
Sun 22nd The Shag could be elusive but was present throughout the day. A Kingfisher and several Goosanders and Goldeneye were noted (PW). The Ring-necked Parakeet was again seen along the West Shore and an adult Yellow-legged Gull roosted.
At Stubber's Green a hybrid 2cy Glaucous x Herring Gull was present.
Mon 23rd The Shag was still present (PW) and ended the day on the ski-ramp. The roost held an adult Caspian Gull, a 1cy Yellow-legged Gull and an adult Mediterranean Gull.
Tues 24th The Shag was still present (GJM).
Wed 25th Chasewater Work-party 10am - 1pm. Meet at Innovation Centre. All welcome.
At dusk the Shag was again on the ski-ramp. The Ring-necked Parakeet was flying around and the roost held 2 adult Caspian Gulls and 3 (2 adult, 1cy) Yellow-legged Gulls (RH).

Thurs 26th The gull roost held 2 adult Caspian Gulls, an adult Yellow-legged Gull and the Shag was again on the ski-ramp.
Fri 27th The Ring-necked Parakeet was briefly seen at 15:30 and the Shag was more active this evening, moving from ski-ramp to raft. The gull roost held an adult Caspian Gull, 2 (adult, 2cy) Yellow-legged Gulls and an adult Mediterranean Gull.
Sat 28th The Shag was still present and a female Merlin flew over Biddulph's Pool at 15:30. The gull roost held 3 (2 adult, 3cy) Caspian Gulls and 2 (adult, 1cy) Yellow-legged Gulls.
Sun 29th The Shag was still present. The roost held 3 adult Caspian Gulls, an adult Yellow-legged Gull and 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls.
Mon 30th The Shag was again on the ski-ramp and the Ring-necked Parakeet was along the West Shore at 15:45. The gull roost held 3 (2 adult, 3cy) Caspian Gulls and 2 (adult, 1cy) Yellow-legged Gulls.
